Root canals have a bad reputation for being painful, but your dentist will use the latest techniques to keep you comfortable during your procedure. You can expect some slight tenderness after your root canal, but here are a few tips to help you manage it.

What to Expect During a Root Canal

A root canal is recommended to save an infected tooth from needing to be removed. Your dentist will use numbing medication to block pain signals for a pain-free procedure. At most, you may feel some pressure or unusual sensations, but you will not experience any outright pain.

Once your mouth is numb, your dentist will remove any areas of decay and extract the pulp from within your tooth. After sterilizing your tooth, it will be sealed with a special material called gutta-percha.

Often, a dental crown is recommended after getting a root canal. Depending on your situation, your dentist may place a temporary restoration while you wait for your final crown.

You can expect your mouth to be a little sore for 3-5 days. Here are a few tips to ease any discomfort and promote a quick recovery:

  • Manage Your Discomfort: Take an over-the-counter pain reliever or anti-inflammatory. Apply a cold compress to reduce pain, swelling, and bruising.
  • Eat Carefully: It can take several hours for the effects of any numbing medications to wear off. Temperature-check any foods or drinks to prevent accidental burns while your mouth is numb.
  • Choose Soft Foods: Eat soft foods that require minimal chewing until your discomfort improves. Avoid any hard or chewy foods.
  • Keep Your Mouth Clean: Brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes and floss daily. Rinsing your mouth with salt water will kill bacteria and reduce pain and inflammation.

If your pain worsens or you develop a fever, contact your dentist.

If you have any questions about what you can expect during or after root canal therapy, don’t hesitate to address your concerns with your dentist. They’ll give you the information you need to calm your nerves.
